Join the Greater Lansing MLK Commission for a special evening of worship and inspiring music. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of recognizing National Black History Month. National Black History Month was recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976. It evolved from “Negro History Week” created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Dr. Woodson was a journalist, author, historian, and the second African American to receive a doctorate degree from Harvard University in 1912.
We also celebrate the 40th anniversary of Mahalia Jackson’s 1976 Grammy Award. She garnered the award for Best Soul Gospel Performance for “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” composed by the Father of Gospel Music, Thomas A. Dorsey. Mahalia belted this emotional tune out to a crowd of over 250,000 from the Lincoln Memorial at Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963. It became the anthem of many marches and demonstrations during the Civil Rights Movement. Music of the Dream is a space to unite and join together in celebration and honor the rich history of gospel music.
