MasterWorks 2: Chopin & Mendelssohn
MasterWorks Series Presented by The Loomis Law Firm
Guest Artist: Colton Peltier, Piano
Kernis: Musica Celestis (Music of the Heavens)
Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 "Italian"
Taken from the slow movement of his String Quartet No.1, Kernis arranged the ethereal Musica Celestis for string orchestra, and brought it to a new audience. Chopin wrote his Piano Concerto No. 1 at the tender age of 20, and who better to perform this imaginative and youthful composition than 20-year-old virtuoso Colton Peltier, making his debut with the Lansing Symphony. Mendelssohn's long-awaited trip to Italy inspired his joyful and energetic Symphony No. 4; a reflection of his own experiences and impressions of his journey.
