Wharton Center remains committed to presenting all the performing
arts disciplines that characterize the great national centers.
The
majority of the shows are not self-supporting.
The challenges are:
- Ticket revenue covers only two-thirds of Wharton Center’s
operating expenses.
- Without private support, operating expenses exceed total revenue
by 15 percent.
- Symphonies, operas and chamber music offer important musical
experiences to small, albeit loyal, audiences.
- Many of the great artists and Broadway productions have exorbitant
performance fees.
Despite these difficult challenges, Wharton Center remains committed
to presenting all of the performing arts disciplines. To be fiscally
responsible, protecting itself against rising artists’ fees,
labor costs, maintenance expenses and the uncertainty inherent in
the economics of the performing arts, Wharton Center must have a
secure future in program sponsorships, capital reserves and an endowment
fund.
Your generous donation allows Wharton Center to:
- Provide arts education opportunities to more than 30,000 school-age
children annually.
- Invite world-class artists and productions to create inspiring
performances.
- Offer multi-cultural programming, furthering the mission of
creating a global community.
- Support artists by encouraging the development of new works
through commissioning and artistic residencies.
- Develop, initiate and expand educational programs for people
of all ages while increasing access for children through affordable
or scholarship tickets.
- Maintain a state-of-the-art facility.
- Keep ticket prices low currently 20% lower than most metropolitan
areas.
- Provide an avenue for aspiring local artists the opportunity
to perform in a professional setting.
- Fulfill the outreach mission of Michigan State University.
